A Clear Guide to What to Expect at Confluence Breath & Bodywork
At Confluence Breath & Bodywork, we believe that preparation is part of the healing process. Whether you're attending an in-person session in Bend, Oregon, or joining virtually from home, your breathwork journey begins before your first breath.
This guide is designed to help you feel calm, informed, and supported by explaining how to prepare, what to expect during a session, and how to care for yourself afterward.
Why Preparation Matters
Breathwork is more than just breathing — it's nervous system regulation, emotional release, and embodied self-discovery. Taking time to prepare creates a physical, mental, and energetic foundation that supports safety, depth, and integration.
When your body feels supported and your mind feels settled, the breath can move more naturally and effectively.
How to Prepare for a Breathwork Session
Preparation doesn't require effort — just intention and care.
Wear Comfortable Clothing
Choose soft, loose-fitting clothing that allows your belly, ribs, and chest to move freely. Layers are helpful, as body temperature may shift during the session.
Stay Hydrated
Drink water throughout the day leading up to your session and afterward. Hydration supports emotional release and nervous system balance.
Eat Light
Have a light, nourishing meal one to two hours before your session. Avoid heavy foods, caffeine, or alcohol so your body can fully focus on the breathwork experience.
Arrive With an Open Mind
Each breathwork session is unique. Let go of expectations and arrive with curiosity and compassion for whatever unfolds. There is nothing you need to force or achieve.
Optional: Bring a Journal
After your session, you may feel called to write down insights, emotions, or sensations. Journaling can support reflection and integration.
Creating a Supportive Space
Whether in person or online, creating a comfortable environment helps your nervous system settle.
Helpful items include:
A yoga mat, bed, or soft surface to lie on
A blanket or light cover
A small pillow or bolster for your head or knees
An eye mask (optional)
Water and tissues
Headphones or a speaker for immersive sound
Arriving a few minutes early allows you to ground, settle in, and connect with your intention.
What to Expect During a Breathwork Session
Each session follows a gentle, intentional structure designed to support safety and ease:
Opening welcome and orientation
Grounding and intention setting
Guided Conscious Connected Breathing
Rest and integration
Closing reflection
You'll be lying down for the duration of the session while being guided through Conscious Connected Breathing. Music is used throughout to support the emotional arc of the experience, along with calm verbal guidance to help you stay present and connected to your body.
Common Experiences During Breathwork
Physical Sensations
You may notice tingling or vibration in the hands, face, or body; muscle tension followed by release; waves of warmth, coolness, or lightness; dry mouth or throat activation; and a sense of grounding or spaciousness.
These sensations are natural responses to shifts in oxygen levels and nervous system activation.
Emotional Responses
It's common for emotions to rise and move through, such as sadness, joy, anger, relief, or gratitude; crying, laughter, or spontaneous sound; memories, imagery, or insights surfacing; and a feeling of peace or clarity.
There is no right or wrong emotional response. All experiences are welcome, and nothing needs to be analyzed in the moment.
Energetic Awareness
Some people experience a sense of expansion or inner spaciousness; intuitive insights or clarity; visuals, colors, or symbolic imagery; and a deeper connection inward.
These experiences may be subtle or profound. Trust that your breath brings forward exactly what's appropriate for you.
Choice, Consent, and Self-Regulation
You are always in control of your experience.
If anything feels too intense, you are encouraged to slow your breathing or switch to nasal breathing, place a hand on your heart or belly, open your eyes or adjust your position, pause the breath entirely, or let your facilitator know if support is needed.
Your experience is never forced. Safety, choice, and consent are foundational at Confluence Breath & Bodywork.
After the Session: Integration and Care
After breathwork, your system may continue processing the experience. Gentle care helps support integration.
Helpful practices include drinking water, resting or sitting quietly, journaling reflections or sensations, taking a short grounding walk, allowing emotions to move naturally, and being gentle with yourself for the remainder of the day.
Breathwork effects often continue unfolding in the hours or days that follow. For a full walkthrough of the days after your session, see our After Breathwork: Integration Guide.
Final Thoughts
Breathwork meets you exactly where you are. No two sessions are alike, and each time you return to the breath, you create space for healing, clarity, and reconnection.
By preparing mindfully and allowing yourself to move at your own pace, you create the conditions for a safe and meaningful experience.
